Whether you’re looking to set a new exercise routine, improve your consistency with reading, or have a different personal goal, sometimes a small attitude adjustment is all that’s needed to make a big improvement in your lifestyle. To help you build a healthy new habit, try these four simple steps.

1. Ask the hard question.

Be honest with yourself and give a solid answer as to why you want to commit to a change or set a new goal.

2. Start small.

You don’t need to run a 5K or read an entire book on Day 1. Instead, start with small, practical daily goals you can keep. For example, try parking your car farther from the store door, add five minutes to your daily walk, or wake up a few minutes earlier to start your morning with one chapter.

3. Piggyback on existing habits.

Add an element to your normal routine. This might mean drinking a glass of water after you brush your teeth or stretching for ten minutes before you hop in the shower.

4. Stay mentally strong.

Remember the personal reasons why you committed to making a change in your life and how in turn your decision can positively affect the lives of those you love most.
